Overnight Vision Correction for Kids: MoonLens Ortho-K
Is Your Child’s Eyesight Getting Worse Every Year? Discover MoonLens Myopia Management
Is your child constantly requiring stronger glasses at every annual eye exam? If so, you aren’t alone. Nearsightedness, or myopia, is on the rise globally, often progressing rapidly during childhood and adolescence.
Historically, eye care was limited to prescribing stronger corrective lenses each year. Today, advanced clinical options allow us to proactively manage the condition.
At Advanced Eyecare, we specialize in myopia management using non-surgical, specialized technologies like the MoonLens Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) system.
Watch the short video below to see a visual overview of how this specialized overnight lens system works to protect your child’s sight:
What is MoonLens Overnight Orthokeratology?
MoonLens is a highly specialized, custom-designed overnight contact lens system approved by the U.S. FDA for overnight orthokeratology. Instead of wearing glasses or contact lenses during the day, your child simply applies the lenses right before going to sleep.
While they sleep, the lens utilizes gentle, controlled fluid forces from the natural tear film beneath the lens to temporarily reshape the very front surface of the eye (the cornea).
When your child wakes up, they remove the lenses and enjoy clear, crisp vision all day long-without needing daytime glasses or traditional contact lenses.
The True Benefits of Myopia Management
-
Daytime Freedom: Your child can swim, play sports, run at recess, and attend school completely free from the physical limitations or hassles of glasses and daytime contact lenses.
-
Long-Term Health Protection: Beyond providing clear vision during the day, the progressive optical design of the MoonLens works to slow down the elongation of the eye (axial length). By curbing the progression of myopia during their growing years, we reduce their statistical risk of developing serious, sight-threatening ocular conditions later in life, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic macular degeneration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is MoonLens safe for children?
Yes. Orthokeratology is a safe, non-surgical, and fully reversible treatment program. The MoonLens system is engineered with highly gas-permeable materials that allow the eye to receive optimal oxygen during overnight wear. If a patient stops wearing the lenses, the cornea naturally returns to its original shape.
What prescriptions can MoonLens correct?
The MoonLens algorithm is highly customizable and is FDA-approved to temporarily correct up to -5.00 diopters (D) of myopia and up to 1.50 D of astigmatism.
Can any eye doctor fit MoonLens?
No. Successfully fitting orthokeratology lenses requires specialized corneal topography equipment (to map the unique microscopic shape of the eye), certified design software, and advanced residency or clinical training. The eye care team at Advanced Eyecare of Hillsborough is fully certified in MoonLens fitting protocols.
